Fourteen

I SMELLED the water before I saw it. It held the scent of vegetation and life, and underpinning it all, a hint of salt. The Civic’s suspension fought bravely as the car jerked down the gravel-covered road leading to the edge of the lake. A grove of tall scrub blocked our sight of anything beyond the road in front of us, but I eventually caught a glimpse of the cabin sitting back in a clearing as the car rounded a bend. After Father Paul had driven a few more yards, Great Salt Plains Lake burst into view. Since my experience of nature was limited to the desert I’d traipsed through after my first escape from the Facility, I was transfixed by the sight of so much water spread out before us.

I was out of the car the moment Father Paul slowed the Civic to a halt at the end of a narrow footpath that provided passage between the cabin and the lake. Heedless of the loose rocks beneath my feet, I jogged toward the beach, stopping only when I stood right at the edge of the water. The silvery expanse rippled gently as a warm breeze blew over the surface. The angle of the late afternoon sun set the lake ablaze in stunning hues of red, gold, and orange. In the distance, the sheer faces of stratified cliffs rose up out of the water before softening into sloped hills covered with a verdant blanket of trees and brush.

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”

I nodded at David’s observation, my gaze never straying from the splendid scenery. I focused my attention on the dark specks floating far out on the water, my sharp vision winning against the sun’s glare as the shapes resolved into swimming birds. When David stepped closer to better share the view, the spicy scent I had come to associate with him wafted past my nose, rising over the smells of nature. I breathed deeply, surreptitiously basking in David’s closeness.

“My dad used to take me camping a lot. Trying to make a man out of me, I guess.” David let out a guffaw. “I enjoyed our trips, even when he made me wake up at the crack of dawn to fish or hunt. I never get tired of looking at gorgeous settings like this.”

“Tim, come help me set up in here.”

I spun around at Father Paul’s request to comply, though I resented having the moment interrupted. Although hours had passed since we’d shared a bed in that dingy motel room, I could still feel the sensation of David’s arousal pressed against my ass. Feigning sleep, I’d tried to get as close to him as I dared, but his reluctance had been palpable. I’d heard every moan and sigh as David had released his tension in the shower, but he had refused to look at me when he’d finally emerged. Not wanting to make him uncomfortable, I had deliberately chosen to give him space while we traveled to the cabin, though I’d longed to feel his arms wrapped around me again.
